APPLE FILET MAT

Materials: Size 10 crochet cotton, steel hook size 7 or size desired. Size of mat is approximately 6 1/2 to 8 inches square depending on tension and hook size.
To begin: Chain 72, dc in 4th chain from hook and in next 2 chains (beginning mesh). Chain 2, skip 2 chains, dc in next 4 chains, across foundation chain. Continue following chart, reading odd numbered rows from right to left and even numbered rows from left to right. Note that if the next row begins with a block, you will chain 3 and turn. If it begins with a space, chain 5 and turn. (Spaces = ch 2, 1 dc; Blocks = 3 dc)

Edging:
Top of piece: Chain 5, turn. Triple crochet (tr) in 5th chain from hook, skip 2 dc, sl st in 5th chain from hook. Then (Chain 5, tr in 5th chain from hook, skip 2 chain and 3 dc, sl st in next dc) across top of piece..
1st side of piece: Chain 5, tr in 5th chain from hook, sl st in bottom of first solid mesh n this side. (Chain 5, tr in 5th chain from hook, sl st in bottom of next solid mesh) down side of piece.
Bottom of piece: Chain 5, tr in 5th chain from hook, sl st in 4th dc of first mesh. (Chain 5, tr in 5th chain from hook, sl st in 4th dc of next mesh) across bottom of piece.
2nd side of piece: Work as for first side. Join to first chain 5.
Block and starch as desired.
