SHELL STITCH BOOKMARK

Materials:
Small amount of bedspread weight crochet thread
Steel hook size 7 (1.5)

Round 1
Chain 44. 4 dc in 4th chain from hook (first chain 3 counts as first dc). (Skip one chain, sc in next chain, skip one chain, shell in next chain) across chain.
Working in free loops on other side of chain, skip one chain, sc in next chain (skip next chain, shell in next chain skip next chain, sc in next chain) across. Join with slip stitch to first dc.

Round 2
Slip stitch to 3rd dc of first shell. Sc in same stitch. Chain 5, sc in next sc. (chain 3, sc in third dc of next shell. Chain 3 sc in next sc) across to last sc of first
side. Chain 5, sc in third dc of end shell, chain 5 sc in next sc, (chain 3 sc in 3rd dc of next shell, chain 3 sc in next sc) across to last sc. Chain 5,join with slip stitch to first chain of beginning chain 5.

Round 3
Slip stitch to third chain of 1st chain 5 loop of round 2. Chain 5, sc in next chain loop. (Chain 5, sc in next loop) 18 times, chain 7 sc in next loop. (Chain 5, sc in next loop) 19 times. Chain 7, join with sc to first chain of beginning chain 7 loop.

Round 4
Slip stitch to 3rd chain of first chain 5 loop. Chain 1, sc in same loop. Chain 1, shell in next loop, ch 1 sc in next loop) 9 times. Chain 1, 7 dc in next loop, (chain 1 sc in next loop, chain 1 shell in next loop) across, ending with sc in second to last loop. Chain 1, 7 dc
in end loop. Join, finish off ends.

To finish: block, iron, spray starch as desired. I dampened and blocked
mine, then sprayed with starch. You might also want to experiment with different colour combinations as you can see I have in the above scan. The first bookmark is done all in the same verigated thread. The second on uses Southmaid Mexicana for the first 3 rounds and purple for the 4th round. The third uses pink for rounds 1 and 3, ecru for rounds 2 and 4
